Are the gas savings on a scooter really worth it?

I have a paid for car that gets 32 miles to the gallon and I drive 20 miles to work. Most of it will be 3 lane highway with some side street.
All through college I rode a Yamaha 800 shaft drive, so I am familiar with motorcycles. I am 270 pounds and 6 ft 2.
So the question really is, what make and model will fit the bill and does the savings in gas really compensate on the price?
