baja sc150 NEW
by: spaceinvader001

I just purchased my new Baja last month. This is not my first chinese scooter. when I was younger I used to buy yamaha kawasaki and suzuki all the "Rice burners" back then they all got the same rap our Chinese scooters are geting today. anyone buying a scooter over the internet must know how to put it together and at least be able to work on your own bike. If not you will need a mechanic willing to do it and pay his price. that is where the dealers come in. pepboys sells automotive and automotive toys and acsessories so I wouldnt except 1st rate motorcycle mechanicing from them. as well their are a lot of shadtree flyby night scooter shops. instead I would suggest going to a Motorcycle shop scooters are motorcycles 2 or 3 wheels is a motorcycle. Most Importantly Make sure they have the MMI emblems and display they are MMI certified. Yes my new scoot gave me a bit of trouble out of the box but what do you expect it come 1/2 way around the world and sat in a box for a year or 2. and sitting can be harder on a bike then running. anyway they did all the repairs and had it 100% it took them a good full day of work on it but they did it and it is working GREAT if i were to do it i could see those same repairs taking me months to complete trying to figure them all out. the rectifir was bad and it had some bad electrical connections and a cracked front fender which they also replaced. hopefully this should help anyone looking for a new scooter and the Baja sc150 is a great running little scoot 0 to 55 and rock steady.
It is the mechanics we are relying on don't blame the bike. Just check your mechanics you will never have a better bike than your mech can work on for you.

Baja OK if you know what your getting into
by: Bill

I bought my Baja RT 150 from Pep Boys out of the box. Right away I had to send it to the shop to remove an emmissions regulator which in turn gave me more acceleration and top speed. the back tail light can easily break if you go over bumps too quickly. finally the headlamp assembly is crap, so make sure you take care of your lights or the lens may fall off while you're riding. I paid $2,000 for mine brand new after Tax, Title and license, and overall I think it's a solid brand as far as the engine goes, BUT.. If you're going to spend the money, why not invest in a Ruckus brand scooter? Baja is the Kia of scooters for sure.

BAJA 125cc
by: Ruth

I have a Baja 125cc for 4-5 years, live in Chicago. Many things were wrong with it from the jump, warranty sucked, repairmen want to charge a arm and a leg - all very difficult. Center stand fell off - I use the kick stand.

Bought 4 batteries - Got a trickle charger = no problems with battery since; small scooters have no alternator. Gas gauge never worked, most motorcycles have none - need to estimate miles to fill up.

Rectifier replaced when new. HINT: REPLACE your OIL often - No coolant for engine. I have put on over 3000 miles! And she still purrs!!

Just recently, the starter quit. Thinking on taking a small engine course! Mechanics' fees are terrible. Parts have been easier to get.

All not bad for 4-5 yrs old and over 3000 miles. Take it to a small engine instead of motorcycle mech. I do not regret mine at all. LOVE IT > Good luck.

Service is much better now. Alot easier to get parts, the things do break down from time to time but somewhere along the lines they figured out that people will need parts.

Dopes

"PepBoys gave us a battery, the other 2 we had to buy from PepBoys. After 3 batteries and being on the road approximately 5 - 7 times, we put it in the garage."

And yet they still couldn't tell you that the voltage regulator/rectifier was bad?? Don't ever take your car to them! That has to be the easiest analysis I've ever made. Or else the plug into the regulator is loose. Your system isn't charging. Not rocket science, just lazy mechanics who don't want to do their job or don't have the parts and are lying to you. Take it to a real scooter shop and backcharge Pep Boys. If the give you grief, threaten to take the story public.

Baja boogie
by: geeser

I have two Baja SC 150's. Got them from Joe's Sporting goods clearance-bot both for about $950 total. Saw all the bad press, first one hard to start, so I took them both right to an authorized mechanic-Scoot-n-skeddle in Milwaukie, Oregon and paid about 70 each to have them go over the entire scooter-readjust cables, check everything out, etc and have had NO PROBLEMS since. Told by the mechanic (Laramie-is that the name of a bike mechanic or what) that most of the problems stem from the scooters not being set up right in the first place. Makes sense-most are put together in stores like Joes and Pep by guys who usually assemble mtn bikes, skis, etc.
If you get one-pay to have it looked over in advance. I ride while others blog and bitch.

Thanks to All Who Have Chimed In
by: Kathi

I wanted to add a note of appreciation to everyone who has chimed in on the Baja Motorsports scooters. It's great to hear differing experiences, and a special thanks to Kim, who presented some positive thoughts on a poor quality scooter.

All this is true - but I love my Baja
by: kim.smith@yahoo.com

I imagine that the original poster for this question has long since decided to go elsewhere for a scooter, which is probably advisable. I did want to speak up with a different perspective though. I was given a Baja Motorsports 125 scooter as a gift 2 years ago, and while I have had some difficulties with it - I adore the crazy thing.
The worst problem I have with it - which is admittedly a big problem - I can't seem to convince the state of Ga. to issue me a tag renewal. I was able to get it titled and tagged the first year - but when renewal time came around they said the make/model was not approved as street legal.
There have been some mechanical problems also - all with the fuel system. Luckily my husband, though not experienced with working on scooters - is gifted at figuring things out and researching on the internet for parts, advice etc. - so I have not had to deal with Pep Boys service (or lack of it)and he has been able to resolve the problams I have had.
All that aside - this scooter is a joy to ride. It has a top speed of 50+ mph, gets there VERY quickly and is so easy to handle. I have 2000 on the odometer (kilometers or miles - not sure) I ride it to work often, which is about a 30 mile round trip. My husband and I took the scooters on vacation and rode them in the mountains - up very steep roads and had no problem. He rides a Tank Urban racer 150 which is also a Chinese make and has had no mechanical problems yet. He loves his, and I have ridden it also, but I prefer mine.
I guess the point of this long ramble is this - I am glad the Chinese makes are available to make scootering accessible at a lower price. We probably would never have been introduced to scootering otherwise. I will undoubtably upgrade someday, but I think I will always keep my little Baja too. So if you have limited funds, and are fortunate to have the knack of tinkering (or someone to do it for you) the Chinese scooters can be an inexpensive entry level option.

Baja Motorsports Scooters -Run away
by: Anonymous

I work for a company that sells Baja Motorsports Scooters. They suck, the bikes are junk, Chinese made, they suffer from electrical problems, engines often don't even start from the beginning. Baja, the company, will do its level best to make sure you get no help. If you can get someone on the phone, and its not likely, they will stall, stall, and stall some more. They hope that if they lead you around long enough you will give up.
If you are thinking of buying one, don't, the product is crap, the company's service worse, and they earned an unsatisfactory rating from the BBB.

Don't do it!
by: Jessica

I bought my son a Baja SC 150 for graduation last June. We had PepBoys perform the necessary assembling for their fee. Near the end of July, my son finally got a permit to ride the scooter. When he rode it, it seemed to struggle to remain running. Then, the battery kept going dead. PepBoys gave us a battery, the other 2 we had to buy from PepBoys. After 3 batteries and being on the road approximately 5 - 7 times, we put it in the garage.

Before the 90 day warranty expired, I made arrangements to take it to the service center. It sat there for FIVE months. They said they were waiting on parts. Finally got it back, and it ran it once. Second time, it was hard to start; third time, it was the same problem as before. It has been sitting at the service center now for a month. This scooter has been broken down more than it has been working. I've heard that BAJA has poor customer service, although for me, I believe it is the service center who is dropping the ball. I just went to the service center today and they were unable to find the work order. They are hoping to look at the scooter next week. In the meantime, I'm paying insurance on something that cannot be used. Buy a scooter with a good reputable name. You will pay more, but in the long run, you will save more!

On another note, we purchased the extended warranty from PepBoys. The clerk told me it was the same as the manufacturer's 90 day warranty, extended for a year. When I called PepGuard, I was told first that the warranty was only for the motor, and later in the conversation that it was only for the 'lubricated parts' in the motor. When asked why the clerk would tell me otherwise, he said that they sometimes do this.

Yes, go somewhere else and get a different scooter. I've been dealing with this aggravation for 10 months now.

Buyer Beware
by: Kathi

Hi Amylee, Be careful what you get for a cheap price. A quick review on the Web revealed that while people often enjoy riding this brand of scooter, the customer service when (not if) something breaks is deplorable. Anyone else have any experience?

Battery Tender Junior in package

A battery tender like the Battery Tender Jr. can make all the difference in whether your scooter will start right up each spring, after being stored for months.

Just about every scooter owner needs to have a battery tender, sometimes called a trickle charger. Unless you are lucky enough to live in a climate where you can ride all year long, chances are your scooter will be put on ice, figuratively-speaking, for at least a couple months every winter.

One of the key steps in winterizing a scooter is to protect your battery from draining during its "rest" period. This can – and will – happen if you leave your battery sitting untended in your cold scooter over the winter, even if it's in a garage or shed.

Read our review or go right to Amazon.com to buy this highly recommended Battery Tender Jr NOW...
