Why would my scooter's kick start be stuck at the bottom?

by Jay
(Tampa, FL)

Hi... I have a Benelli M50 scooter, it's new to me but used. Yesterday it wouldn't start with the electric starter so I tried to kick start it. First, it made a grinding type sound and absolutely sounded nothing like an engine trying to turn over, second, the lever was stuck at the bottom, third, when I manually pulled it back to top/starting position it made all kinds of steel/steel grinding sounds.

I've got some mechanical skills but by no means an expert. Sounds to me like some spring is broken but I have no idea. Any advice as to what to check (keep in mind I'm broke!).

Thanks,
Jay

Yup it's the spring.

I have the same scooter. It is a common problem with Benelli. The spring is either broken or detached. You should remove the cover and see for your self. Then take out the spring and if it is broken you can grind the and then bend the end of it and reattach it again. However it is really hard metal and a REAL PAIN!!!!! to do that. I hated it every time of the 20 times is happened to me, nearly made me to trash the damn thing.

Take a look

If you take the belt cover off, you will find a 1/2 moon shape gear, a round gear with a guide wire on it and a spring. This is a learn as you go project.

Look for missing teeth on the 1/2 moon shape gear. If so it may need replacing. Make sure the guide wire on the round gear is between the guide post.

You should be able to find a Utube ( scooter repair learn headquarter ) video on line showing all this.

Good Luck

Battery Tender Junior in package

A battery tender like the Battery Tender Jr. can make all the difference in whether your scooter will start right up each spring, after being stored for months.

Just about every scooter owner needs to have a battery tender, sometimes called a trickle charger. Unless you are lucky enough to live in a climate where you can ride all year long, chances are your scooter will be put on ice, figuratively-speaking, for at least a couple months every winter.

One of the key steps in winterizing a scooter is to protect your battery from draining during its "rest" period. This can – and will – happen if you leave your battery sitting untended in your cold scooter over the winter, even if it's in a garage or shed.

Read our review or go right to Amazon.com to buy this highly recommended Battery Tender Jr NOW...
