Why is my VIP 50cc scooter stalling out when accelerating over 30mph?

I bought the scooter off criagslist about a year ago and it's been running fine. I've been keeping up with oil changes and everything else and last week it started stalling out if I go over 30mph.
It has always been able to go 50mph and the speedometer also goes to 50mph... it kinda feels like it's not getting gas on acceleration. Also at the same time, stuff started happening... the gas gauge started not working.
I checked the air filter and gas filter and that was not the problem. It starts up fine and runs fine... the only problem is stalling out at 30mph... please help!!

Yes, I have been noticeably absent from the site the past few months. I recently lost my mother to a long battle with COPD and was subsequently plagued with a bunch of minor health problems. But I'm better now & back full swing.
