Why is my Tao Tao scooter's headlight shorting out?

by Dane
(NC)

A couple months ago, the low beams on my headlights on my Tao Tao scooter went out. At first, I thought it was just the bulb going bad, so when it finally went out I replaced it with another, but still, only the high beams work.

I've only had the new bulb a few weeks, and already it's gone out. When it was working, the beam would flicker and wane sporadically, which leads me to think it's a wiring issue, rather than shoddy bulbs, but I haven't been able to find anything. Help?

High beams not working NEW
by: Travisk

I just bought a taotao lancer 150cc with only 778 on the odometer. For some reason the high beam lights don't work but the low beams do (smaller bulbs). Both fuses look fine, wiring looks good, and the bulbs look like new (not burnt out). When i try to switch to the high beams the indicator light doesnt even come on. Any thoughts?

TaoTaso blowing head light bulbs NEW
by: Ron S

I have a 2014 TaoTao scooter. I bought it still in the crate. I put on the front end and connected the battery and when I turned on the key switch, it blew the inline fuse. I replace it, it blew again. Traced it down to a grounded stator. No warranty. Ordered one online from ebay. Installed it. The short was gone. I finally got to start my new scooter. It blew out the headlight bulb. I Ran it for about a week without a headlight. Then, this new stator stopped charging. Burned out. Bought another one, installed it this time with a new voltage regulator. Voltage runs too high. About 16.5v. first time out burned out the low beam in the bulb. I've said all this to say with a new stator and voltage regulator, it still charges too much for the bulbs. Anybody know how to get the voltage down to 14.5 - 15.2 volts?

Battery Tender Junior in package

A battery tender like the Battery Tender Jr. can make all the difference in whether your scooter will start right up each spring, after being stored for months.

Just about every scooter owner needs to have a battery tender, sometimes called a trickle charger. Unless you are lucky enough to live in a climate where you can ride all year long, chances are your scooter will be put on ice, figuratively-speaking, for at least a couple months every winter.

One of the key steps in winterizing a scooter is to protect your battery from draining during its "rest" period. This can – and will – happen if you leave your battery sitting untended in your cold scooter over the winter, even if it's in a garage or shed.
