Why is my scooter making a bapping sound when running?

by Chris

Hi, it almost sounds like my scooter is making a bapping sound, or sounds like an exhaust leak, but there definitely isn't one, one day I started it right up and just went, didn't let it warm at all, so after that, is when I started to hear this sound, this thing is like brand new... please help.

Best Guess

Is it a bap bap bap or bap ba bap ba bap or is it really a bap ping bap ping sound; because if it's really a bap ping bap ping, you've got some serious trouble! Just joking; to my best guess, based on the limitted info you gave, sounds like a fuel system related problem. If the scooter runs ok other than the annoying sound, and you're sure it won't damage it to be run, drive it down to a low tank and refill with fresh gas, or just top up the tank you have. If that doesn't work, check your carb float bowl for contamination; don't drain the float bowl; remove it carefully so the contents don't spill, and then examine the full bowl for contaminants before you empty it. If there are contaminants then clean the float bowl make sure the jets and circuits are clear beforeyou replace the carb; then change your fuel filter making sure the flow arrow is pointing in direction of flow.

The other thing that comes to mind is a sticking valve; make sure your oil level is correct; if it is low that is reason to suspect a sticking valve. If you suspect a sticking valve, sometimes just topping up the oil can fix it, if that doesn't sometimes adding an oil additive will help, but you may have to disassemble the valve train if not; get a Haynes Chinese Scooter Manual for about $30.00 online. Before you do this wait for other members advice; I'm giving this advice off the cuff from a coffee shop; could be something more obvious that is just not coming to mind right now. Good luck.

Battery Tender Junior in package

A battery tender like the Battery Tender Jr. can make all the difference in whether your scooter will start right up each spring, after being stored for months.

Just about every scooter owner needs to have a battery tender, sometimes called a trickle charger. Unless you are lucky enough to live in a climate where you can ride all year long, chances are your scooter will be put on ice, figuratively-speaking, for at least a couple months every winter.

One of the key steps in winterizing a scooter is to protect your battery from draining during its "rest" period. This can – and will – happen if you leave your battery sitting untended in your cold scooter over the winter, even if it's in a garage or shed.
