What's the best way to control and turn a scooter at low speeds?

by Chris Beer

Hi- so on a motorbike, you use the clutch and throttle in the friction zone plus rear brake to give more stability at low speeds when going round corners, or weaving around cones or doing circles practice etc.

But on a scooter, is it recommended to use the throttle with the rear brake also on a bit for slow speed control, or should you just rely on the throttle for control?

Thanks for your help!

Chris

Rear brake NEW
by: Darryl

I recently took a motorcycle/scooter Basic rider class. And I was told to use a combination of the throttle and rear brake. It works. Keep engine speed high enough to where you feel it pulling. And keep pressure on the rear brake. That will allow you to balance at really slow speeds and negotiate tight turns.

It just takes a little practice.

Hi Chris,

With that automatic transmission, you don't need to worry much, other than the throttle and maybe have your hand covering the brake. Slow turns don't require you to lean as much. There are scooter riders who can pretty much keep both feet up at very close to a stopped position. :-)

Happy riding.

Controlling Your Scooter In The Turns
by: Bob ArtistCarter

Hi Chris,
To me, good control of your scooter is in your eyes. Your scooter will go where you are looking so look exactly where you want to go. Really practice this. Find an empty parking lot and ride figure eights training yourself to focus your eyes exactly where you want to go. Make it become habitual. I find that I naturally make left turns with ease, but I must concentrate hard to make smooth right turns. Don't know why this is, but when I practice I spend more time on those "tricky for me" right turns. Practice lots. It will come easier to you in time. Good Riding Down Under.

Battery Tender Junior in package

A battery tender like the Battery Tender Jr. can make all the difference in whether your scooter will start right up each spring, after being stored for months.

Just about every scooter owner needs to have a battery tender, sometimes called a trickle charger. Unless you are lucky enough to live in a climate where you can ride all year long, chances are your scooter will be put on ice, figuratively-speaking, for at least a couple months every winter.

One of the key steps in winterizing a scooter is to protect your battery from draining during its "rest" period. This can – and will – happen if you leave your battery sitting untended in your cold scooter over the winter, even if it's in a garage or shed.
