TaoTao ATM50-A 50cc Scooter Review

by Sean Conner
(Baltimore,Maryland U.S.A.)

I recently bought this scooter and so far it runs well. It will do 35-45 m.p.h. and for the longer drives I have taken has driven quite well. The price I paid for the scooter was $950 and I know if I shopped around I could of found a better price but i wanted to be able to test and see what I was getting beforehand.

My petite girlfriend drives it well also and loves riding it. I am good with tinkering and take an interest in any vehicle I have in this way. When it comes to buying a Chinese make scooter I understand that you very much should be willing to work on your scooter or in the long term you are asking for trouble.

The only problem I am seeing so far is that i am having a terrible time trying to get information on the care and maintenance of this scooter. The manual helps but it is pretty basic.

Overall if you are looking for a cheap Chinese make scooter this is a good option to look into. So far, so good at the 500 k.m. mark. About to do the first oil change and hope all stays well with good maintenance.

Taotao poor customer service NEW
by: Anonymous

I purchased a 2014 atm50-a in the factory crate. there was some assembly but not to hard. once it was assembled and ready to roll I put gas in to it and fired it up. the fuel pump was defective. it leaked all over. what a disappointment. the worst was yet to follow. two weeks to get a replacement. what a joke. I called Taotao and they just blew me off. they could care less about there consumers. They told me to deal with the dealer I had purchased it from. I explained that I had tried to and they were the ones telling me two weeks. when a company doesn't care about there product or the consumer its a sad day.

Battery Tender Junior in package

A battery tender like the Battery Tender Jr. can make all the difference in whether your scooter will start right up each spring, after being stored for months.

Just about every scooter owner needs to have a battery tender, sometimes called a trickle charger. Unless you are lucky enough to live in a climate where you can ride all year long, chances are your scooter will be put on ice, figuratively-speaking, for at least a couple months every winter.

One of the key steps in winterizing a scooter is to protect your battery from draining during its "rest" period. This can – and will – happen if you leave your battery sitting untended in your cold scooter over the winter, even if it's in a garage or shed.
