SYM CityCom 300i Scooter Review

by Anonymous

I ride a SYM CityCom 300i. I have about 3100 miles to date. My opinions are:

1. This is THE scooter for riders over 6 ft./182cm. Plenty of legroom, no knee pain from a low seat.

2. Power is good, but upgrading to 19g Dr. Pulley sliders improves acceleration. It's faster than nearly any car to 40 mph.

3. Excellent on both the freeway (Portland to Seattle at 70 mph) and around town. The suspension is impressive... handling drops in freeway pavement after bridges on I-5, in the rain, just as well as my sports touring motorcycles.

4. Paying the price premium is worth the increase in quality vs. the Chinese mid-scooters. I actually like the CityCom better than the TMax, SWing, and Big Burger... for long distances I use my ST motos, so the size of the maxi-scooters has no benefit for me, and is a penalty around town. The CityCom is just as well built as the Big Burger, and that is saying alot.

5. The CityCom is THE best in its class, and drove Kymco to develop the Downtown 300i, which may surpass the CityCom overall, and certainly will in horsepower.

6. The Carter Bros. "promotion" items, w/s and top case, are not Givi's top quality, but are still OK. The rear mount is excellent. When your top case latch jams, push the top half from the hinge area to free the latch.

The only gripe I have is not specific to my SYM, but to all Taiwanese user and service manuals... Chinglish. I have worked (and ridden) in Taipei, so I know what they're trying to say, e.g., removing the windscreen (turn the handlebars to reveal L and R bolt access UNDERNEATH the handlebars, then push ONLY the black front trim down. Do NOT put any force on any body parts.).

Battery Tender Junior in package

A battery tender like the Battery Tender Jr. can make all the difference in whether your scooter will start right up each spring, after being stored for months.

Just about every scooter owner needs to have a battery tender, sometimes called a trickle charger. Unless you are lucky enough to live in a climate where you can ride all year long, chances are your scooter will be put on ice, figuratively-speaking, for at least a couple months every winter.

One of the key steps in winterizing a scooter is to protect your battery from draining during its "rest" period. This can – and will – happen if you leave your battery sitting untended in your cold scooter over the winter, even if it's in a garage or shed.

ATTENTION! I have had to delete the Scooter Forum for this site, unfortunately. Despite my best efforts, I could not adequately prevent daily attacks by hackers and spammers. Even though most of their posts did not go public, they still cluttered up my website host's server space, jeopardizing my account. I appreciate everyone's contributions over the past few years and I apologize for having to do this.

Wondering why your scooter question never got posted?

Chances are, there is a good reason. Did you...

If you "checked yes" on any of the points above, then I've deleted your post. Sorry, but I have standards. Feel free to re-submit, following the instructions I have everywhere on the site.

Also... all submissions have to be reviewed by me, and I am currently backlogged. Comments go live without approval, but still take 30 to 60 minutes to show up, so don't repost them, please.
