Scooter Down

by Di
(Tucson, AZ USA)

I had my scooter covered and parked in the driveway on the right hand side edge of a very wide driveway, so that people would not run into the scooter. July 28,2011 morning I found my scooter down. I asked the people who live in the front house if they had hit my scooter (their family members are the only individuals that use the driveway besides me).

Naturally, they denied hitting the scooter and informed me it was the wind that knocked it down. The wind was gusting that day but not more than usual and my scooter had gone through worst wind storms. I checked out my scooter and there was a scratch on the tank where something came into contact with the scooter scratching the paint.

I keep my bike well maintained and I have before and after pictures. Their theory was that the wind must have tipped the scooter over (nothing else tables, chairs, umbrellas all remained intact) and their second theory was an intruder got into the yard and tipped the scooter over. What do you think?

You know there could happen anything. It could be your neighbors. It could be a stranger or maybe even wind. Next time try to find more safer place.

Wind NEW
by: John

It is an understatement to say that here in Wellington, New Zealand, we get a lot of wind.

Scooters regularly blow over while parked in the city. It's a real problem. So far I've been lucky, finding a big harley or similar to provide shelter.

My main problem so far has been people parking their old, scratched scooters right up against my shiny new one, and scratching it.

I'm currently weighing up the appropriate responses to this, such as opening up the vinyl seat cover on the offending scooter, or leaving threatening messages, but am open to other suggestions if anyone has any ideas.

Hard to Say
by: Kathi, Site Owner

Di... In the absence of an eyewitness, it's really hard to guess what might have happened. I have never heard that a scooter will tip over very easily unless someone were to bump it and I've certainly never found my own fairly lightweight 125cc scooter to be tippy at all when up on the center stand.

However, I DO know that side kickstands are not nearly as reliable a support for a scooter as a center stand, especially if you are parked on blacktop in the sun, which can get soft.

Hope you can get this sorted out...

Battery Tender Junior in package

A battery tender like the Battery Tender Jr. can make all the difference in whether your scooter will start right up each spring, after being stored for months.

Just about every scooter owner needs to have a battery tender, sometimes called a trickle charger. Unless you are lucky enough to live in a climate where you can ride all year long, chances are your scooter will be put on ice, figuratively-speaking, for at least a couple months every winter.

One of the key steps in winterizing a scooter is to protect your battery from draining during its "rest" period. This can – and will – happen if you leave your battery sitting untended in your cold scooter over the winter, even if it's in a garage or shed.
