Next stop is in the little town of Montara, CA., just up the road from Moss Beach. All of these little towns (Half Moon Bay, El Granada, Moss Beach, and Montara) have long histories on the Coast.
They are kept small due to the Santa Cruz Mountains that form the backbone of the San Francisco Peninsula. These mountains rise up to the East and behind the towns squeezing them against the Ocean.
Montara is noted for this unusual lighthouse (see photo) that clings to the side of the cliff warning ships of the rocks below that are often shrouded in fog.
Many of these lighthouses are no longer in service in the traditional sense. Modern radar technology has replaced them. This one and its buildings are used as a hostel for travelers. It is a nice stop and photo-op.
