Here's my ride!

Here's my ride!

I am Joe Nobles and I own a Zhejiang Jonway Shenke Co. Ltd. YY50QT 50cc scooter. I am a newbie to scooting... I just got my 50cc Chinese, it was given to me for free!

One of my classmates had been trying to get rid of it for a little while and found out I was going broke driving my car back and forth to college (42 miles each way). He understood my situation so he said I could have the scooter.

I'm a 45 years old unemployed junior in the Respiratory Care program at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida. I've owned my scooter since 4/4/11... I've never driven either a scooter or motorcycle before.

I tested it out on the 4/2 and liked it right off the bat! So now instead of spending 60 bucks a week driving my Dodge, it's only $12 on the scooter; the catch is it takes 2 hours to cover the distance to school but it works for the time being. I am an old school kind of guy and hope to own a 50cc Vespa one day after I graduate from my program (and land a job!).

So keep on scooting!

Vacuum Leak
by: Jim Zeiser

Also look and make sure a vacuum line didn't fall off, your intake manifold is tight and the manifold itself isn't cracked. A long trip like you're doing tends to make a motor shake and vibration will loosen things up.

50cc scooters run tight clearances on their valves and need to be checked every 1,000 miles. I run .003 inch on my 50cc motors. Bring the engine to top dead center and check both valves there. Otherwise it could ba bad coil or CDI unit. I had a CDI unit that gave me spark but didn't work when I tried to run the engine.

Well the time has come to dig in and fight back. When I was given this scooter it seemed like a great deal I mean a FREE! scooter wow. Okay first day I'm on the road 3/4 of the way to school 42 miles away from home (not the first time I went this far, I drove it 48 miles from my classmates home to get it home) the drive belt breaks.

I figure no dig deal I mean I didn't pay any thing for the scooter in the first place. So the scooter goes to the shop... $90 later I drive the scooter back and forth to school the remaining 2 days last week.

On day 3, scooter had a hard time starting, took about 10 min. of cranking then firing up running about 1 or 2 min. then quitting, then finally getting out of the neighborhood... stalled at first stoplight, started up on 2 tries.

Got to school. After class same deal! Lots of work to start, first mile stall at light quick recovery runs the rest of the way home O.K.

Yesterday cranked and cranked and cranked. No go!! Drove car. After school, checked gas to carb o.k. do we have spark? Yes. Change spark plug anyway just in case, you know $2.00 why not? Still no go. What gives? I even tried to kick start... nothing.

I have no clue as to what to do and is there something the guy in the shop should have caught and brought to my attention? It was serviced at the shop where it was originally purchased.

So if anybody out there in the land of happy scooter drivers know what to I'll give it my best shot.

Thanks! Joe N.

Take care of it

I am on my 3rd Jonway scooter; got about 10,000 miles each.

My service routine:
  • Oil Change every 500 miles
  • New Spark Plug every 1500 miles (don't clean they are cheap)
  • Clean air filter every 1500 miles
  • Replace carb at 5000 miles

Remember these are not made for speed, don't push it... the scooter will pay the price. Do the legal limit 30 mph.

Nice to hear from you all! Kathi, here in the Gainesville area those colours are seen everrrrrrrrrrrrrywhere! They the colours of the Florida Gators that spectacularly popular SEC football and basketball teams from U.F. !

That aside thanks for the tips, so far. I'm sure that as the miles go by maintenance monsters will set in, but I've been accustomed to that kind of thing as I am an avid collector/user of vintage Soviet photographic equipment (by the way the principle of getting more bang for your buck applies to these quirky little machines too). Well more later!

Keep In Touch

It's no secret that I'm a fan of Chinese scooters even though I have a Honda too. If you change the oil on a regular basis and do the valve adjustments when required it should last you a good, long time. Let us know how it's doing. At the rate you're going you should rack up mileage quickly. It will be fun to hear how it's holding up.

Oh... and nice scoot!

P.S. I forgot to comment about your scooter itself. It'd be a big hit in my town, Boise, home of the blue turf, as it is the exact colors of our beloved Boise State Broncos! It looks like a Bronco mobile...

Welcome to the club!

Welcome, Joe! Glad to have you here. How fortunate you are to have been given such a gift. That's commitment, though, to take 2 hours to get to school... haha. Still, scooting is so much fun, I'd almost like a reason like that to get on mine each day. Alas... I work at home. :)

Chinese scoots need lots of TLC and regular maintenance, so be sure to check in here should you have any difficulties and the folks here will help you right out.

Again... welcome!

Battery Tender Junior in package

A battery tender like the Battery Tender Jr. can make all the difference in whether your scooter will start right up each spring, after being stored for months.

Just about every scooter owner needs to have a battery tender, sometimes called a trickle charger. Unless you are lucky enough to live in a climate where you can ride all year long, chances are your scooter will be put on ice, figuratively-speaking, for at least a couple months every winter.

One of the key steps in winterizing a scooter is to protect your battery from draining during its "rest" period. This can – and will – happen if you leave your battery sitting untended in your cold scooter over the winter, even if it's in a garage or shed.

Read our review or go right to Amazon.com to buy this highly recommended Battery Tender Jr NOW...

Attention!

I'm Back!

Yes, I have been noticeably absent from the site the past few months. I recently lost my mother to a long battle with COPD and was subsequently plagued with a bunch of minor health problems. But I'm better now & back full swing.

I had to delete over a hundred questions that had been submitted, some because they were too old for answers to still be valuable and many because they were written in text speak, which I don't accept on the site. PLEASE... use proper capitalization & punctuation, so I can publish your question/review, etc. without editing. Thanks! :)

Wondering why your scooter question never got posted?

Chances are, there is a good reason. Did you...

If you "checked yes" on any of the points above, then I've deleted your post. Sorry, but I have standards. Feel free to re-submit, following the instructions I have everywhere on the site.

Also... all submissions have to be reviewed by me, and that can take a few days sometimes. Comments go live without approval, but still take 30 to 60 minutes to show up, so don't repost them, please.
