2012 TaoTao CY50-B Italian Style Scooter Review

by Justin
(Dallas, TX)

I have wanted a scooter for as long as I can remember. Paying 6k for a Vespa just wasn't in the cards, so I found a dealer on Craigslist, Dallas Power Sports. I went there on New Years Day of 2012 where they had a deal to get the scooter fully assembled, registration, and helmet for $749 out the door (after taxes).

The people there are very knowledgeable and nice. Now, knock on wood, but this scooter is awesome. It has a nice black and white retro look with tan leather seat and a storage box on the back. I'm a big guy (6'0' 270) and this bad boy will get up to 40 on flat roads and 20 up steep hills.

I haven't had any mechanical problems yet, but again, I've only had it two months. My one complaint is that when I hit a pothole, the storage box comes flying open, even with it locked. I have to wrap a bungee cord around it if I use it for shopping or whatnot.

I usually ride this scooter for fun around the lake or around the neighborhood. I will take it to work every now and then, but I always stay on the residential streets if I can, which makes for a beautiful ride.

One day I will upgrade to a 150cc Vespa or Lambretta, but this was great to get in the game with.

Satisfied customer!

Great Lil scooter NEW
by: I Currie

Got my 49ers taotao scooter and I haven't had any issues with it. I change oil every month (Castro 5w-30). Add fat as  maintenance I done the valve adjustment at 600 miles. I put the racing gear set, turbo cooling fan and variator weights in it. I cruise easy at 40mph. I hype this one last, it's my baby. Great fun

Odometer/Speedometer NEW
by: Justin

If you do go with this scooter, just know that the odometer and speedometer register in kilometers (as with most Chinese scooters). The bottom line with smaller numbers on the speedometer is the MPH. When I first bought this scooter, I was shocked at how many miles I was racking up in a short amount of time, and thought something was wrong. Then I got online and found out it is registering in kilometers.

Wait NEW
by: Steve

I bought one from the same folks and they are nice and they do provide parts PDQ but after 8 months the engine is blown. Meticulous maintenance was observed yet it just hasn't held up...you get what you pay for. I have upgraded to a BMS 50cc Tuscan. Heavier bike with more features especially the larger tires which enhance the ride tremendously.

Don't get me wrong I loved my TaoTao but they just are not built to last. No wonder the cheap price...it's a cheap bike.

Battery Tender Junior in package

A battery tender like the Battery Tender Jr. can make all the difference in whether your scooter will start right up each spring, after being stored for months.

Just about every scooter owner needs to have a battery tender, sometimes called a trickle charger. Unless you are lucky enough to live in a climate where you can ride all year long, chances are your scooter will be put on ice, figuratively-speaking, for at least a couple months every winter.

One of the key steps in winterizing a scooter is to protect your battery from draining during its "rest" period. This can – and will – happen if you leave your battery sitting untended in your cold scooter over the winter, even if it's in a garage or shed.

Read our review or go right to Amazon.com to buy this highly recommended Battery Tender Jr NOW...
