2011 Ice Bear Compeller Trike Scooter Review

by Dave
(Boston, MA USA)

I own a 2011 Ice Bear Compeller Trike style scooter that I bought from MotoBuys.com. Here is a summary of my experience with this scooter...

Pros:
  • Lots of fun to ride
  • Looks good
  • Good speed (55-60 max mph)

Cons:
  • Finding someone to work on it is hard and might be impossible. I had one local guy do the prep work but he doesn't like these Chinese trikes so he won't work on it any more. Any advice in the Greater Boston area?
  • Occasionally slips right out of gear, usually going uphill. Have to pull over and kill engine and restart. So far that's "fixed" it but it seems like something that is likely causing damage in the drive train.
  • Can not currently drive with a passenger. It slips out of gear as soon as I start to pull away. Dealer support is email-only so I sent an email requesting assistance and they "sent it to the service guys" but I got no response for over a week. Finally I sent another email and got an email response with a tech support phone number to call so I still have to try working through that.
  • Screws holding the seat support come unscrewed every single ride. Locktite might fix
The seat isn't really "comfortable" although I'm not sure that's unusual.
  • Rattles like crazy. Still haven't done the double-sided tape on the front fender and maybe that will completely fix it but the front rattle seems to be mostly just above the dash, not on the front panel itself. There's a piece of plastic connected directly above the gauges and that seems like the primary rattle.
  • Rear trunk rattles and you can see the "shavings" collecting around the trunk opening.
  • The shift lever is on the foot panel and it's kind of in the way if you ever want to stand up.
  • Suspension is very rough. You feel every single bump. Should have gone with the "improved suspension model".
  • Can't say I feel totally safe doing turns at any kind of speed. It's still fun, but if I had kids I'd probably go with something else.

GY6 engine service in Boston area NEW
by: Anonymous

International Motor Sports in Rockland, Mass (AKA Cruze scooters) imports and sells exclusively Chinese scooters that use the GY6 engine. Big shop downstairs with machanics who know the engines and do quick work at a decent price. They're my guys for my 150cc scooter. They don't stock trikes, but are still likely your best bet.

Scooterdoc NEW

If you go to www.scooterdoc.proboards.com there are plenty of people with trikes who can offer support. The gear slippage thing sounds like the gear shift cable is out of adjustment. The stalling sounds like it's time for a valve adjustment or a vacuum line is off. Also run a few ounces of Seafoam in your gas.

OP follow-up
by: Dave (OP)

Thanks for the tip on the Avon mechanic. I will definitely check that out.

A few updates on the trike - the rear fender panel rattled right off last night and ended up getting caught on the tire. I eventually had to just force the fender up and out of the way, kind of resting it against the taillight for the rest of the ride home. We'll see how the warranty goes on that one.

Also, there was one occasion a few weeks ago where the engine would start but opening the throttle would cause it to stall out. This happened out of the blue when I pulled to a stop at a red light. It stalled and I couldn't get it running properly again. I left the trike for a few hours and came back and the problem was still there, and then it started working again a few minutes later, then it happened one more time on the ride home and hasn't happened since.

FYI, as of now it's got about 700 miles on it. I try to baby it when I can whenever there are bumps, but there's only so much you can do. At this point I'm just not sure that the scooter is cut out for anything but the smoothest roads.

(to the editor, I'm not sure how to log in to post under the account used for the original posting. let me know if there is a better way to post this followup.)

Check This Out
by: Jim Zeiser

There's a place near Boston called Danny's. If I recall they're in Avon. He sells all brands of scooters, maybe he can help.

Battery Tender Junior in package

A battery tender like the Battery Tender Jr. can make all the difference in whether your scooter will start right up each spring, after being stored for months.

Just about every scooter owner needs to have a battery tender, sometimes called a trickle charger. Unless you are lucky enough to live in a climate where you can ride all year long, chances are your scooter will be put on ice, figuratively-speaking, for at least a couple months every winter.

One of the key steps in winterizing a scooter is to protect your battery from draining during its "rest" period. This can – and will – happen if you leave your battery sitting untended in your cold scooter over the winter, even if it's in a garage or shed.

Read our review or go right to Amazon.com to buy this highly recommended Battery Tender Jr NOW...

ATTENTION! I have had to delete the Scooter Forum for this site, unfortunately. Despite my best efforts, I could not adequately prevent daily attacks by hackers and spammers. Even though most of their posts did not go public, they still cluttered up my website host's server space, jeopardizing my account. I appreciate everyone's contributions over the past few years and I apologize for having to do this.

Wondering why your scooter question never got posted?

Chances are, there is a good reason. Did you...

If you "checked yes" on any of the points above, then I've deleted your post. Sorry, but I have standards. Feel free to re-submit, following the instructions I have everywhere on the site.

Also... all submissions have to be reviewed by me, and I am currently backlogged. Comments go live without approval, but still take 30 to 60 minutes to show up, so don't repost them, please.
